Permeable Interlock Pavers- Water Management Simplified
Smart stormwater management. Strong performance. Built for Ontario conditions.
Permeable interlock pavers look similar to traditional interlocking stone, but the system beneath them is completely different.
Instead of shedding water into the street or storm drains, rain and snowmelt pass through the joints, into an engineered open-graded base that temporarily stores water and allows it to slowly infiltrate into the soil below.
A proper permeable system includes:
-Permeable concrete pavers
-Open joint aggregate or resin-bonded sand (not polymeric sand)
-Bedding layer designed for infiltration
-Open-graded base and sub-base
-Geotextile, Geo-Grid and drainage (if necessary)
When designed correctly, permeable pavers handle heavy vehicle loads, freeze–thaw cycles, and Ontario winters with ease.
What Are Permeable Interlock Pavers?
Permeable interlock pavers are quickly becoming the preferred choice for residential driveways and commercial hardscapes across Toronto and Mississauga. Designed to allow water to drain naturally through the surface, these systems reduce runoff, manage stormwater at the source, and meet modern municipal and conservation authority requirements — all while delivering a clean, high-end finished look.
At The General Contracting, we design and install engineered permeable interlock systems that perform year-round and are built to last.

Modern
This paver offers a smooth surface texture that enhances its sleek, modern appearance. Paired with a contemporary colour palette, it delivers a refined finish well suited to modern driveways, walkways, and commercial hardscape applications.

Luxury
Inspired by the look of historic clay pavers, its durable construction makes it well suited for driveways, patios, and walkways that demand reliability under real-world use. Designed with generous joint spacing, Town Hall is an excellent choice for permeable paving systems, supporting effective drainage and stormwater management without sacrificing visual appeal.

Sleek Linear
Linear plank design that delivers a clean, contemporary aesthetic. Its modern profile is a popular choice for architects and designers seeking a refined, high-end look. Available by special order in a range of contemporary colours and finishes, Promenade pavers can be installed on their own or combined with complementary styles to create a fully customized hardscape design.

Heavy-Duty Commercial
Engineered specifically for heavy-duty applications. Integrated spacer bars create consistent joint openings that allow water to pass efficiently through the surface when installed over an open-graded base with clear stone joint fill. Designed to handle vehicular traffic, an excellent solution for permeable driveways, parking areas, and industrial pavements. For large-scale commercial projects.
Stormwater Management at the Source
Permeable pavers significantly reduce surface runoff by allowing water to drain directly into the ground. This helps prevent:
-Flooding
-Standing water
-Ice buildup in winter
-Overloaded municipal storm systems
Compliance with Toronto & Mississauga Requirements
Municipalities across the GTA increasingly encourage — and in some cases require — Low Impact Development (LID) strategies. Permeable interlock systems align with these objectives by:
-Reducing runoff volume
-Improving water quality
-Supporting sustainable site design
Durable Enough for Driveways & Commercial Traffic
When installed with the correct base depths, permeable interlock pavers are suitable for:
-Residential driveways
-Multi-vehicle driveways
-Commercial parking areas
-Fire routes and service lanes
-Walkways and loading zones
Long-Term Cost Savings
Permeable systems can reduce or eliminate the need for:
-Catch basins
-Trench drains
-Underground storm piping
-Ongoing asphalt repairs
Over time, this can mean lower maintenance and infrastructure costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to commonly asked questions about our products and services.
Are permeable interlock pavers approved in Toronto and Mississauga?
Yes. Permeable interlock pavers are widely accepted across Toronto and Mississauga as part of Low Impact Development (LID) and stormwater management strategies. When designed and installed correctly, they meet municipal expectations for runoff reduction and site drainage.
Do permeable pavers work in winter?
Absolutely. Permeable systems perform very well in Ontario winters because water drains below the surface instead of freezing on top. This reduces ice buildup, surface cracking, and freeze–thaw damage compared to asphalt or poured concrete.
Are permeable pavers strong enough for vehicles?
Yes. With proper base depths and materials, permeable interlock pavers are suitable for cars, trucks, and commercial traffic, including parking lots and service areas.
Do permeable driveways require more maintenance?
Maintenance is minimal and similar to traditional interlock. Periodic sweeping or cleaning may be required to maintain infiltration over time, especially in high-use areas.
Are permeable pavers more expensive than asphalt?
Initial installation costs are typically higher than asphalt, but permeable systems often reduce the need for catch basins, drains, and long-term repairs — making them cost-effective over the life of the installation.
